Brave Merida and Her Mother: Mother’s Day Edition

May 11, 2013

My family and I had the honor of attending the Coronation ceremony of Merida, the fiery young star of the movie Brave, into the Disney Princess family today thanks to the generosity of Disney and the fine folks behind the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.  Beyond just the thrill of seeing such a rare Disney Princess crowning—at Disney’s Magic Kingdom no less—it was even more meaningful on this Mother’s Day weekend that Merida’s mother, Queen Elinor shared the stage with her daughter. She placed her crown on her head, embraced her and then stood close clutching her heart with pride as she watched her brave daughter take her place as princess. It was an awesome experience. I totally cried. And although I know they’re only characters from a movie, having daughters of my own made watching the tender and powerful exchange between them made my heart swell with such intense mama emotion.

Of all the many things I want for my daughters, standing at their side like Elinor did, while they claim their power, their voice, their beauty, their courage, and their dreams would have to be at the top of that list.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing, encouraging, dedicated, supportive, devoted and loving moms out there. And a very special thanks to my own mother who has always stood close, clutching her heart with pride. I love you mom.

Elevating the Everyday on Studio 5

April 26, 2013

Just in time for Mother’s Day I got to share some of my thoughts and feelings about what I consider one of the most important pictures in your family’s photo collection. This one is for all the moms out there! To see what that picture is and/or if you need a little encouragement, take a peek at my segment on Studio 5 on the topic.

For the record, I had the BEST time with the folks at Studio 5. Thoughtful, gracious, encouraging, this team of people is top notch! Thank you ALL for having me. It was a pleasure and an honor.

And if that wasn’t enough, I got to visit the most charming bookshop ever where I met some wonderful women and talked about motherhood, photography and creativity. Thank you to everyone at The King’s English bookshop for hosting and to all of the ladies that came to say hi, you’re the best. If you missed me there but live in the beautiful area surrounding the shop, they’ve got some signed copies of Elevate the Everyday if you’re looking for a copy. I can’t think of a better Mother’s Day gift to give a mother, if I do say so myself (I can say that, can’t I?).

The Wonders of Nature

April 13, 2013

bird quote 5_800

Last week I discovered a Hummingbird’s nest in our backyard. From the look of it, it had been there for a number of weeks. Well built, round, dense, sturdy and secure the tiny nest was carefully wedged in the Y shape of our small Magnolia tree branches, covered and camouflaged with a canopy of large, curved, waxy leaves. Since the discovery, I have become a woman obsessed. I can now tell you anything you might want to know about Hummingbirds. And I can give you a play by play of this mama bird’s behaviors and daily routine. But most of all, I can tell you that I have become deeply attached to this particular nest. It’s our nest now. It’s in our yard. It’s our responsibility. What else can I say but I guess it brings out the mama bird in me.

Not sure at the time what stage the nest was in, I rented a lens for the weekend anyway, just in case. Low and behold, things were further along than I realized. After careful observation through a long lens perched on a tripod I have seen two baby birds emerging, beaks to the sky and I have watched as a very fierce mama (she’s not too keen about being watched) diligently do her best job of feeding, nurturing and protecting them. And because I don’t want to disrupt her motherly rhythm, I keep my distance. I wait. I watch. I am quiet. I am still. I am patient. I am careful. I am aware.  And with of all that, I’m really glad I rented that lens.

You know that feeling when you don’t want to miss a thing? I’ve got that. I’m committed to seeing this thing through and if I can, documenting it. With each day that begins and ends with safe and sound baby birds, I am reminded that life is nothing short of a miracle. You know exactly what I mean, don’t you? I thought so.

Making Memories with Snoopy

December 7, 2012

Last Sunday was a whirlwind of pink sponge curlers, dance costumes, commutes, run-throughs, super-markets, not to mention, streets slick with rain. And all of that happened before we could even think about leaving for the media holiday event at Knott’s Berry Farm. It had been years and years since my last visit to Knott’s and because my family had never experienced Knott’s “MerryFarm” we were all really looking forward to it. I knew I, for one, was in dire need of an infusion of  “Holiday Spirit” and the chance to slow down and enjoy some seasonal cheer sounded ideal. A hectic schedule and a little rain weren’t going to stop me. Needless to say—due to our harried morning—we arrived just as the reception was about to wrap up. Luckily, we managed to get a quick picture with Santa-Snoopy, enjoy a holiday treat, and sit down in the festive space long enough to warm up and dry off.

Most of the other attendees had already headed out to run around the park except my sister and I, so all was quiet and calm as our girls got to decorate the last of the gingerbread men. Things were clearly winding down but that didn’t stop Snoopy from coming over to join us.

{cue the uplifting holiday music}

The next 10 minutes were enough to melt any mother’s heart, especially a mother who had raced to get there, a mother who really needed some holiday magic, and perhaps most importantly a mother who has loved Snoopy since her earliest childhood memories.

As my daughter, my niece, and Snoopy shared some giggles and hugs and bonded over cookie decorating, I began to feel nostalgic. Watching Snoopy—Santa Snoopy no less—tenderly interact with my daughter as she beamed brighter than the North Star, I was reminded of all the things that made the holiday season special; friends, family, moments, and memories. I eyes flooded with memories of Christmas’s past; both those of my children and those of my own and was reminded that poignant interactions and meaningful experiences are really what bring us the most joy, not just during the holiday season but always. I soaked in those few minutes knowing that it was precisely that kind of magic that would help mindfully carry me through the rush of December.

A very special thanks to Lala Castro at Giga Savvy, Knott’s Berry Farm & of course, Snoopy himself for inviting us to the event and giving my family and I our very own little Christmas miracle.

15 Years Ago Today

November 19, 2012

More than any other birthday, this one feels the biggest. I guess that’s what I can expect from here on out. I don’t know, but it’s making me really weepy. I’ve got all kinds of things to say about this amazing child that came into our lives with a sweet and soft song on a rainy Wednesday afternoon 15 years ago but I can’t bring myself to say any of it right now.

I guess the only thing I can say (without crying) is that it seems appropriate to be escaping for a few days in celebration of her birthday at Thanksgiving. I can think of nothing I am more thankful for right now than for the chance to focus what matters most for a few days. OK, never mind, I’m crying again.

Summer Remembered

June Lake Camping With Kids

Although I have hundreds of images from this summer, this (taken at our campsite) is the one that stops me in my tracks. Together, telling, timeless. This month at Shutter Sisters we’re celebrating and sharing a number of ways in which we all Elevate the Everyday. With today’s prompt, The Great Outdoors, this is the shot that does my mama heart good. This is the moment where my everyday was indeed elevated.

Be sure to join us all month long as we all play along together, tagging our shots #sselevate.
