I was 42

I was 42

Last night, on the eve of my birthday, my sister and I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd annual OC Blogger’s Ball. It  was hosted by Blog Crush founders Marcy Massura and Suz Broughton at the lovely Embassy Suites in Anaheim and was a wonderful evening of mingling amongst local blogging friends. If it weren’t for these ladies, I’m not sure I would have even realized there was a thriving community of bloggers right here in my own backyard. I am so grateful.

Beyond the party atmosphere, excellent food and great company, there were generous gifts donated for a raffle. We each got a ticket on the way in. My sister held both our tickets and noted, “OK, I’m #41 and you’re 42”. I replied, “Yes, I am 42 but only for a few more hours and then I’ll be 43”. She looked at me with her big brown eyes and gasped. “That’s an omen!” We both laughed (although both of us are big into signs like those).

Later that evening, after yummy eats and drinks and bloggy conversation we were nearing the end of the raffle. When Marcy called out the numbers for the ipad (which was donated by the gracious folks representing Atwater Collection clothing) she called out 42. Yep! My number! I WON AN IPAD.

What an unexpected yet delightful way to kick off my birthday.

And then today, it was a perfect mix of the people I love, pancakes, play pools, a jumper, birthday cake, kind wishes from near and far, a few pints of Sierra Nevada’s appropriately named brew “Summer Fest” and more birthday cake.

Tonight as my birthday winds down, I not only toast to abundance in all it’s many forms, I embrace it. What a lucky lucky lady I am.

happy birthday!! Wow, what a cool win! Let me know your thoughts on it, can it replace your laptop? I played with one in the Apple store but didn't get enough time to fully explore. Enjoy!

I guess when I stop and think about it being 42 years ago, I feel somewhat old. It was the summer of 1969 and I was getting settled into Reed Hall and awaiting my first football game between the hedges. I was born a Bulldog, but since I lived in Brunswick, a ten hour journey round trip, I had never been to Athens in my life. Now I was there, a Junior College transfer with excitement and hopes of seeing the Dawgs in real life. I quickly noticed that there were a lot of Oldsmobile 442's riding around campus and my Mom's 65 Impala seemed like a bomb. The girls liked those 442's, Corvettes, and MG's, but at least I had an 8 track tape player under my dash.

It was in August 1969, the weekend when Woodstock would capture the Nation and I had my first date on campus. The Dogs would win that first game and my life for the next 2 1/2 years would never be the same. Those days on the red clay hills of Athens, living in the Sigma Chi House, attending every football game the Dogs played, and living the greatest life one could live will forever be in my heart.

I can't travel to Athens today due to injuries of the back caused by over 20 years of Military service, but my mind has never forgotten that first football game. To all those who will walk those hills for the very first time in 2011, capture the moment and live every moment, for in 2053 you'll be my age and that first game would be 42 years ago. Remember the walk, the ride, the game, the dance, but whatever you do, don't load up on chiii dogs right before the game.
